Lets say 11 teams from League A 7 from B and 2 from C qualify as winners or runners up in the main qualifiers. Play offs would then be League D- 4 mini group winners C- best 4 teams from C ( unless the auto qualifiers are 1 or 2of them, if so replace with 5th and then 6th best B- best 4 of 5 teams from B not already through A- 1 team from A not already through plus 1 remaining team from B plus next two in line from C So you work up from the plankton and minnows. It's 'fair' to stronger C teams who play off against each other r/t say Germany or Italy- and of course a safety net for the latter and for the weakest B team. Unfair to a B team who misses auto quali narrowly then loses a playoff- against that not making the top 20 isnt really 'unlucky'

We may end up as 3rd seed despite successive top 2 finishes. Against that, we will likely get a play off in early 2020 even if finishing 4th or 5th in the main series next year. So swings and roundabouts. Or friendlies and a half. If Michael sees them as a chance to experiment fair dos

    Squad formation v Bosnia

Aye. From the 'Goaldrought Generation' Brunt, Lafferty, Ward, Hughes, McAuley, McGovern and Carroll have basically gone to a combination of age, injuries and f**kwitedness in Laff's case. McGinn, Corry, Ferguson etc are basically fringe now- but who knows, their replacements might turn out as good or better. And of course even Davis and JEvans are struggling for games...

    Team Formation v Austria

Last 20 if we need a goal: go 3-5-2 with Grigg or Boyce for Ferguson?

    Cue rent-a-Shinner saying we're a Vassell Statelet...

Cheers for that. Not previously heard of him, but seems related to Darius?

    Squad v Austria (A) and Bosnia (A)

Aye. He'll pick them as long as they're at a club and fit- I was guessing that both will be unfit

    Squad v Austria (A) and Bosnia (A)

We'll be in either pot 2 (if finishing first or second) or 3 (if last). It's a stretch to think of that difference as massive- although of course we could get say France as our top seed and Italy second. Equally it could be Switzerland again and a fading Iceland

Hughes and Ward early favorites. If they're both fit Flanagan and Jones?

    Republic of Ireland (A) - Nov 15

Yes the friendlies were compulsory and against one of only 7 other teams

    Republic of Ireland (A) - Nov 15

The way the NL is organised forced us to play 2 friendlies from a limited number of other teams with free dates. Have to grin and bear the circus around it :)

    Starting XI v Israel

It's a friendly. We need to try someone who will likely replace him sometime during this campaign. I would start him in all the other NL games if fit. If he does start it'll likely be only for 45 minutes. If you insist, bring McNair on for him then

    Starting XI v Israel

Limit is 6 in an 'official' friendly which this is (as opposed to say the 'closed doors' game with the South in 2015). Let's say 3 changes to starting line-up (Boyce, Grigg and Corry for Laffs, McGinn and Davis). 3 at the back because with 5 in midfield that's the only way to fit in 2 up front. Carson, Smith, McNair, Whyte, Jones and Washington to come on for Bailey, McLaughlin, Norwood, Dallas, J Evans and Boyce. 21 of the available 22 players used.

...or McLaughlin? In which case ----------------------BPF/ Carson --------CML/PMN--Cathcart--JEvans Dallas--Norwood--CEvans--Saville--Lewis ----------------------Grigg--Boyce Hopefully a look at in Smith in a back 3, Whyte on the right, Jones left and Washington up front

    Post mortem

We'll be seeded third in the Xmas draw if we finish below Bosnia and Austria, second otherwise Realistically however we would still make the play-offs even after stiffing in the 'main' qualifiers after Xmas- the new system will reward past not current performance.
  17. Floreat Ultonia

Bosnia. And Herzegovina too. What are they like?

5 wins in the last 6 home friendlies (Korea, New Zealand, Belarus, Slovenia and Latvia)

    Squad v Bosnia (and Israel)

Starting XI v Israel could be interesting, esp the defence. Who would be the 2 or 3 centre backs? Previous media reports this week (eg BBC) hint strongly at BPF starting against Bosnia

Bosnia. And Herzegovina too. What are they like?

It's being called a glorified friendly competition not least because realistically most teams in Leagues A and B will qualify automatically. And so those who dont will likely make the play offs even if they stiff in this Autumn's games

    Wasn't it the previous day?

    Squad v Bosnia (and Israel)

League appearances so far this term, sorted by division. Given that it's August, probably too early to say how regularly many of them will feature. It's a tough 46 game season where most of them play. edit- not forgetting McAuley of course. He may feature in next week's update. Smyth is on standby as suggested above source: Soccerbase

    Squad v Bosnia (and Israel)

    Time flies when you're 38 3/4 (if I r emember correctly )
  24. Floreat Ultonia

    Squad v Bosnia (and Israel)

My point above was that 9, 10, or 11 players as automatic picks isn't ideal, although 4 or 5 is probably too few. A mix of continuity with competition for places

McCullough (went on Mosquito Coast tour), Flanagan, Liam Donnelly? None of them may ever make it, but we won't know until they're tried etc. Apart from the risk of playing a very rusty McAuley, what's the point of him or Hughes in another friendly?
