No Goss either, when is U21 squad announced?

It's usually drip-fed by clubs on Twitter and posted by the IFA about a day before the game.

Smyth and peacock-farell with the under 21s?

Smyth almost certainly. BPF might want to stay with Leeds given he's just got himself a starting spot.

The U21s are doing well. It would be foolish to deprive them of key players now. Is Goss anything more than a rumour?

Disappointed no Smyth or Peacock Farrell, made their breakthrough in the Championship and thought they at least deserved a squad place, fairly uninspiring tbh.

MON: “Brunt is taking a break from international football at the minute. Me and Chris will continue to talk and in September we will see where he is at.”

“Paul Smyth will be part of the U21s squad, he is someone who is definitely in my thoughts.”

“Will Grigg wants to be involved but he wants to concentrate on Wigan and their promotion push. In the summer we will see where he is at.”

Fair enough then. Though surprised Lewis hasn't stayed with under 21s but will be good for Michael to have a closer look with the brunt situation

Our defence options look bare. Thankfully hughes and mcauley have hung around a bit longer. Are there any others coming through?

Regarding smyth-oneill must be either very confident he is going to stick with us and will be happy with the under 21s or smyth has asked for more time to think things over.

Don't forget Cathcart. And the boy McNair could fill in, at a push. We'll be fine.

Smyth has already spent time with the senior squad. And even capping him against S.Korea would not tie him. More to the point, Michael is not the sort to hold out senior caps solely to try to influence a player unduly - he'll place the player where he thinks best.

On which point, involving him in two important NI U-21 games is the best place for him and the team, esp since he'll hardly be too far (physically) from the senior team anyway.

So why is better for Smyth to play for the u21 but not for Lewis?

I'd imagine it's because brunt is out

With Brunt being out and Ferguson struggling for fitness, maybe he sees a start for Lewis? Esp since J.Evans will be needed in the centre.

Whereas forget the eligibility business, on purely footballing grounds, Smyth must be behind Ward, Dallas, Jones (and Ferguson?) for a place in the team.

Two reasons IMO

1) Lewis has only played 1 U21 game for us, so is no loss to the U21 squad, whereas Smyth has been alot more involved.

2) There is a very good chance Lewis will start against South Korea with no Brunt in the squad whereas there are alot of players infront of Smyth in the squad, there would be little point in him training all week and not being involved, playing two high quality games for the U21's would be much more beneficial to him.
