Squad v Bosnia (and Israel)

When is the under 21 squad announced?

Not the sort of thing they normally announce in advance. Usually see a mix of tweets from the players themselves and their clubs. Smyth is on stand-by for the senior squad according to one journalist on Twitter.

Over the moon to see Grigg back in, thought we had lost him, I still believe he could/should be our main striker if we play to his strengths. Strong squad on paper but way too many not playing regular football!

League appearances so far this term, sorted by division.

Given that it's August, probably too early to say how regularly many of them will feature. It's a tough 46 game season where most of them play.

edit- not forgetting McAuley of course. He may feature in next week's update. Smyth is on standby as suggested above

Yeah it was the night before. He'd have to do the reverse this time, play v Bosnia then fly to Spain. Spain U21 V NI U21 is the same night as the Israel friendly. Given we've already two spare players (25-man squad) I can't see that happen without a plethora of injuries.

No sign of Liam Feeney, Cameron McGeehan! Niall Keown! Must all be injured, only jesting BTW!

Ward did play 70 minutes for the Forest Under-23 side in their 3-3 draw with QPR on Monday, and could feature again on Friday when they host Watford at Alfreton Town’s Impact Arena

The Nottingham Forest forward is yet to feature for the first team this season and has been deemed surplus to requirements at the City Ground, but Michael O’Neill has named the 32-year-old in his squad for the game against Bosnia and friendly with Israel three days later.

No Sean Scannell either!

Though there is one other forgotten soul who looked as if he might just have what it takes, but whose career has stalled: Ben Reeves.

Tbf, he played 36 times (7 goals) last season for the Charlton team which somehow got to the Lge One P/Offs, but whatever his (and Michael's?) hopes for this season, he's got off to a bad start, after injuring his Achilles in pre-season, so not expected back into full training until September:

Bad craic about Ben Reeves indeed.

Regarding Whyte (and to a lesser degree Paul Smyth since he has already made his debut and scored) I have to agree with what Michael said about players needing to work hard and not get promoted to the senior squad just because of a handful of league appearances. Now, having said that, on this occasion the fact the U-21s are playing Spain softens the blow for me of not seeing the wee Hatchetman Whyte making his debut as I think 90 minutes against Spain U-21s are much more valuable than maybe 20 minutes against Israel.

Grigg's back. Smith too. No Smyth or Whyte.

McGovern, Carson, BPF

Hughes, McAuley, J Evans, C McLaughlin, Smith, Lewis, Cathcart, McNair

Davis, Norwood, Ferguson, McGinn, C Evans, Dallas, Saville, Jones

Lafferty, Magennis, Boyce, Washington, Grigg, Ward

Team v Bosnia:

BPF

Hughes, Cathcart, J.Evans, Lewis

McGinn, Davis, Norwood, Saville

Magennis, Grigg

C.McLaughlin to come on in place of Aaron (who I selfishly want to get to 120 caps) on 60 mins.

J.Lewis to act as a wing-back with J.Evans covering.

Davis starting is maybe a risk but he’s unique and has the experience and class despite a lack of match sharpness. McNair to deputise if needs be - possibly reverting to a 4-1-3-2 formation.

Grigg to play off Josh, who just gets the nod over Kyle. Grigg has to start a competitive game at some point; we should take advantage of his (and Josh’s) confidence levels at present, mix it up a bit and reward him for his commitment.
