Squad for Belarus and Estonia at home

Fairs fair, if they think he’s doing a great job this season then who am I to argue. And I’m delighted for him, hope they go up. Over the course of his career though it’s been clear he’s not Premier League standard and never particularly shone in the Championship.

As for his exclusion, it was suggested by Michael that Ollie needed a rest. From two important qualifiers whilst (if last night is anything to go by) still turning out for his club. Now, if there’s not more to it than that, I wouldn’t be rushing to select him again. I don’t think that’s harsh at all.

I'd agree he maybe isn't premier league quality but he has played a part in Fulham and Brighton getting promoted and now a big part in Sheffield United challenging to go up so I think it's harsh to say he hasn't particularly shone at that level

i tend to agree with Bazza, a steady player but does nothing special he is slighly over rated

Has done well seeing teams get promoted good enough for championship level but never made the step up to PL, and the same is likey to happen if Sheff utd get promoted

Saying that he is still a regular part of our squad and we will need him especially with Davo near the end of his career

"Good enough for Championship level" is as good as/better than, all bar two of our squad (CC/JE).

In fact, he's one of just five players who are starting regularly in the Championship (Lewis, C.Evans, Saville and Josh M).

The lad needs a break in more senses than one. :(

I think Norwood has been generally poor since the Euros, although as a team we’re clearly not the force we were. For a dead-ball specialist he creates very little and doesn’t score. He’s a decent Championship standard bits & pieces midfielder who’s benefited from having very little competition for his position. As for “he needs a wee break”, he’s still turning out for his club so I’d be more than happy to give him a permanent break from international football.

Presumably you're disgusted that Lafferty (amongst others) is anywhere near the squad then, given his (recent) past behaviour?

Ridiculously harsh!!

Agreed! You’d think he was holding back a Premier League regular from a starting place judging by some of the nonsense on here.

I think Norwood has been one of our most important players for years now and is under appreciated. I hope I look silly when we cope fine without him... but I fear it will be the reverse.

Did someone say he’s a new father? He’s not the first to ask to be excused for that reason. He won’t be the last. Like the manager, I hope he’s back in June.

An ever present through two of our most successful campaigns ever, and you'd be happy to see the back of him?

:blink:

Yeah, but he was actually picked at LB, presumably because we had no-one else.

We had Tony Capaldi.

Yeah OK, we had nobody else.

Over rated? With the amount of bollocks talked about him on here he may be the most under rated, and certainly under appreciated, players we've ever had.

This is the guy who put the ball on Josh's head (well maybe shoulder) to seal qualification. Oh, and lets not forget a certain free kick that was quite special.

The guy is an OWC legend (yes, legend) who will probably/possibly/hopefully win 100 caps.

I'll give that a harrumph.

I’ve already addressed these points but in short:

IMO he was an ever present due to a lack of competition for his midfield berth, not l because he was particularly outstanding. Who was genuinely pushing for his starting place?

No I wouldn’t be happy to see the back of him but nor would I be too worried about it. Despite the lack of alternatives if he’s bailed on two qualifiers because he needs a rest but is ok to crack on and play club football I wouldn’t be selecting him again any time soon.

He is clearly overrated by some on here. (I’d say, in your words, they’re talking bollocks tbh.) He does an alright job in the middle of the park. Usually no more than that. A tidy bits & pieces midfielder.

Yes two stand out moments, they were great. Both more than a while ago now though unfortunately. He’s had a handful of really good games for us over the years. (Law of averages?) Very few during & since the Euros though.

Legend? Not for me.

I don't think many people are overrating his ability, just lamenting the impact of his absence. He's been crucial to us because he does that "alright" job - nothing glamorous, the pressing of the opposition's midfielders and being available for a pass when we have the ball. Ok, not quite as dogged as Damien Johnson was, maybe doesn't run the distance Corey Evans does, and doesn't have the creativity of Davis. But the fact that he's done all the bits and pieces in a tidy fashion, pretty reliably, has been really important to us, especially given the lack of alternatives.

IMO, and again not overrating him, he is indispensable to our squad right now.

Norwood hasn’t been great for a while now, lets be honest, his set piece delivery has generally been poor which is why we really miss Brunt in our squad.
But he’s been playing out of his skin this season for a good Sheff Utd side and would have started again for us no doubt. We have Corry Evans to come in his place - and if he performs and does well, Norwood might find it difficult to get back the side (with a bit of luck).

By that time, Big G could be playing for Larne!

With all the injuries and players off form, hats off to anyone who calls the correct XI!

One person who is in good form and playing regularly is Ferguson, who hasn't got a look-in yet on this thread, err, other thread - apologies!

"I wouldn't be selecting him again any time soon" is backtracking from your previous  "I’d be more than happy to give him a permanent break from international football."

Anyhow, from the present squad you'd presumably wave goodbye to:

Michael McGovern - Had to be told by Brian Kerr to try the IFA, since he wasn't going to crack it with ROI;

Jonny Evans - Picked up a yellow card suspension so as to be available for Ferguson/MU next time out; appeared decidedly lukewarm when we were struggling and MU were flying;

Aaron Hughes - Retired from international football, before changing his mind;

Shane Ferguson - Turned down several call-ups under NW;

Jordan Jones - Turned his back on us for England(!), before returning to the fold;

Will Grigg - Turned down call-ups;

Conor Washington - Turned down call-ups;

Kyle Lafferty - Where do we start?

In fact thinking about it, didn't even Big G talk about retiring from international football at one stage? :scratch_one-s_head: (Don't quote me on that, for the oul memory's not what it was. And the oul memory's not what it was, either)

Yes, Big G said he would quit international football if he didn't start getting some minutes under Worthless.

We simply cannot afford to lose anyone, never mind a regular like Norwood. But i'd like to think he wont walk straight back into the side, especially if Corry Evans does a good job in his place.
