Post Mortem

Recommended Posts

Was at a wedding but luckily got to see the last 10 minutes so seen the winning goal. Was a great move I thought.

We tried the near post flick on a few times on Thursday so good to see it pay off for the first goal.

Think Dallas could have done better for their goal. Turned his body away from the ball.

Great save at the end from Peacock-Farrell. Not sure where Lewis and Ferguson had gone. Can't give those sort of chances away against Germany and Holland.

The atmosphere sounded very good on the highlights

I 100% agree we need Jones in the team; he offers something different. We will need that in the next, more difficult games, but i would be surprised MON goes with both him and McGinn, one will surely be sacrificed fro Corry/ Norwood. Very direct, attacks the box. Although his end product leaves something to be desired, he's young and one would expect that to develop and improve. He isn't helped by Lafferty's (lack of) movement in the box. The position and space Josh found would surely suit him better over a full 90 minutes. However, Belarus often had 8 players parked on the six yard line at times.

Atmosphere and performance was much better than Estonia, helped having the extra drummer in. Brought the wee lad up for his first competitive fixture in the Kop , he puked with excitement following Josh's goal!!

You cannot fault that commitment!!

Time for a moan.

Our throw-ins and set pieces were pretty poor last night. McNair likes those floaty balls into the box from free-kicks, and they were easily cleared. McGinn's delivery for Davis to flick for Evans goal was about the only decent cross we got for most of the game. Lack of movement in general was pretty poor too.

I'm not a huge fan of Dallas at RB he was pulled way out of position for their goal. But in fairness the midfield were fannying about on the left when they lost possession. Dallas was much better when he played further forward.

I really don't like Jones. The one or two flashes he showed aren't enough for me. Surely we have better options than him?

Saville was pretty poor last night, did he get a knock early on?

Lafferty was poor again i thought, though not as bad as on Thursday. Big Josh was much better when he came on. Lewis again was very good, he's PL class. Jones was OK i thought, but quite wasteful. Our midfield looked solid. I'd have liked to have seen Smyth come on to run at defenders for the last 10/15 mins.

I was impressed with Belarus in comparison to Estonia - they'll be a very tough team to beat at their place in June.

Am rather annoyed at Norwood's current stance, it sounds like it may be case of him throwing his toys out of the pram? I fear he's possibly finished with NI.

Super night and result, like most I think big Laffs scoring days are over and hope Grigg is fit for June but Josh does deserve a chance too. Jones as people say can be frustrating but he is a bit of headache for defenders and will get better over time. BPF did well again and lucky goal they got although we give it away in midfield too easy to start the move. As good as the midfield played I still think we miss Norwoods passing and delivery so whatever is going on with him I hope it gets sorted out for June!

Doesn't look like it judging by Michael's latest comments. I appreciate that it is personal but surely we are due some sort of explanation? We've been pretty loyal to him when he was sitting on his arse at multiple clubs.

My word we made tough work of that. It would have been gutting to have not claimed all three points, considering how little attacking Belarus actually did.

BPF was solid in goals, starting to look more and more at home. Back four looked settled too - Dallas should have maybe closed down the space quicker for their goal, but it was a very fortunate deflection.

Thought Davo was quiet and Saville huffed and puffed in places. Seeing mixed opinions about McNair, IMHO I thought he was our MOM by a long way. We were struggled to connect the passes together so we needed to get into the final third with some strong running. He did that. Set-pieces were grand at times, maybe a few too loopy ones.

Jones looks very dangerous when he is at full flight but his left foot isn't up to scratch crossing wise. Also interesting that McGinn was gutting in a lot on his left. I'd have liked to have seen them swap at some stage, just to see how Jones would have got on on his 'natural side'.

Lafferty gave his all, but his all at the moment is about 50% of what it should be. He's not match fit - the move to Rangers hasn't worked out. I was ponderous at the time if he would have better staying at Hearts under the watchful eye of Austin and close to Michael in Edinburgh. If Gerrard sees fit to move him on this summer, where does he go?

Big Josh did well when he came on, held it up and was a bit of a pest. He got fortunate that their two centre halves were caught ball watching and he ghosted in between, though I'd imagine Boyce was lurking in there too and took one of the defenders away.

All in 6 out of 6. The next two games will shape our campaign - minimum of 4 needed - 6 would be massive and would give us a glimmer of hope.  We are due one of those famous September nights aren't we. Monday 9th September could be a special evening indeed....

Boyce was lurking just behind Josh....and that goal shows what we can do when we have two up front...

Thought McNair played well, but, if playing as a '10', should have been getting closer to Lafferty.

BPF - not much to do but stood up when needed. I was critical of him at the time for the goal but seeing it back on the highlights theres nothing he could have done.

Dallas - not a RB. He's a good player do we've got away with it against the lesser teams. Need a change of shape to make it work long term imo.

Evans & Cathcart - different level of player to the rest of the squad. Positioning, distribution, everything.

Lewis - very promising. Likes to get forward and that cross he put in for Lafferty to shy away from was excellent. The Laffs of 4 years ago nods that in or at least doesn't pull out of the challenge for fear of getting bumped by the gk.

Davis & Saville - worked hard, thought both were a little loose at times but i think as a duo they knit everything together well and both will always show for the ball, making the distribution of the CBs all the easier.

McNair - MOTM for me. He feels like a real driving force going forward and i prefer him on set pieces to Norwood.

McGinn - Dont really recall him being too heavily involved but i still think he's the best wide option we have

Jones - wasteful but a good outlet to relieve any sort of pressure. Could end up being an important player in the matches where we dont have that much possession.

Lafferty - looks like he's done. Looks so low on confidence. That cross from Lewis on the 75th or whenever it was sums up Lafferty right now. Keeper drawn out, ball swinging back away from goal, just stick your head on it and it's a goal or you get clattered and its a penalty. Instead he pulled out and the chance went. Should never have left Hearts.

Ferguson - better on the ball than Jones and has more end product. I'd have thought he would have been more suited to the games where we would have expected to dominate the ball.

Boyce & Magennis - much better movement than Lafferty. Much better hold up play and linking the play.

Going into next 2 fixtures I'd like to see Smyth get a chance. Him and Jones  with their pace either side of Magennis would be a force to be reckoned with i think. More than the sum of their parts.

I'm surprised to see a few people saying they prefer McNair on set pieces to Norwood. Have to say I don't think Paddy should be on set pieces at all. I only seen the highlights of last night but can't remember too many good balls in on Thursday night

I'd imagine your average Belarusian might be feeling a bit aggrieved this morning. They put in the type of backs to the wall performance that worked very well for us through a couple of recent campaigns.

But who gives a sh*t about that?

I'm not about to say I enjoyed it. Not at the time anyway. It was too frustrating, and then too nail biting, for that. I'm thoroughly enjoying the afterglow though.

As for the game itself. We played well. I don't think anybody had a poor game. Well, maybe Lafferty wasn't great.

Special mention has to go to BPF (a huge save at the end), Jamal Lewis (a class act already) and Josh Magennis (fantastic centre forward play for the winner).

As for Jones, who seems to getting a bit of stick. I like him. He's a handful. I do wonder if it's a horses for courses situation though. Jones's speed and directness, against teams we're attacking. might see him start again in June. Ferguson's defensive ability, and delivery from set plays/wide areas might see him come in for the Germany/Holland games.

Delighted for Magennis & McNair. McNair's set-piece delivery is good on the whole and he has goals in him (him and Saville need to step up in that regard).

Dallas is not a natural full back and hopefully McLaughlin can get back 100%.

Lewis defensively is still suspect but he's the future at LB.

Jones has the obvious X-factor so we'll just need to suffer the 4 times out of 5 that's wasted for the 1 time that works. His kind of quickness can unlock any defence and we're looking at those 4 massive games in the autumn.

I said exactly the same thing to my Dad at half time.

The overlap from Dallas / Mcginn works a whole lot better than the Lewis/Jones overlap. Hopefully they can work on that.

Lewis and Jones had a few words a couple of times last night over who should be where and a lot of finger pointing at one stage

Dallas wasn't overlapping that much in the 2nd half v Estonia or 1st half v Belarus. The first 20 mins of the game last night he just stopped running even when there was plenty of space. It must have been tactical (don't get caught too far up the field).
